“Beauty to me is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.” -Gwyneth Paltrow
Hometown: St. Louis, MO
Deciding moment: I always knew I wanted to be in a profession that would help others feel more secure about themselves. At first I focused on makeovers to help people boost their self- confidence. I grew to love the skin care aspects of being an Esthetician. Healthy looking skin can have a huge impact on your self-confidence.
Other hobbies: Cooking, going to see live music, cheering on the Cardinals and exploring new St. Louis restaurants.
Recommend for everyday use: At the minimum, use a cleanser, toner and a moisturizer with SPF. Once you are comfortable with that routine, add a serum and eyecream. For optimal skin appearance, use an exfoliant and treatment mask weekly. Keep in mind that each person has different skin and ask a professional for advice on product use and selection.
Recommendations for clean and healthy skin: Healthy skin starts from within and water plays a key role. Drink plenty of water! The amount varies by person. Take your body weight and divide by 2. Divide this number by 8. The resulting number is equivalent to how many glasses of water you should drink daily. 2.
Use a full spectrum SPF, one that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. This can help prevent against skin cancer, aging, hyper-pigmentation, capillary damage, free radical damage, and collagen and elastin deterioration.
Make sure you are using appropriate products. Keep in mind that professional products are generally better formulated for individual needs. They have a higher concentration of performance ingredients and you don’t have to use as much product.
Favorite Product: I love the Dermalogica boosters. Each booster is designed to treat a specific condition and can be used alone or mixed with your Dermalogica mositurizer. There is even an SPF booster, that transforms your moisturizer into a sunscreen!
How do you facials differ from others used in your field?
I really try to determine what the client’s primary goal is. A majority of people get facials for relaxation purposes, in which I focus on massage. Some clients want a facial treatment because they are concerned with breakouts, in which the focus turns to extractions. Other clients aren’t sure if they are using the correct products for their skin, so I will focus on a skin analysis and product recommendation.
