Preston Salon Spa is launching a fund-raising and awareness campaign for colorectal cancer by offering blue hair extensions beginning in March. Stylists will apply blue hair extensions for a $12.00 donation, with all the proceeds going directly to the Colon Cancer Alliance, a national organization dedicated to ending the suffering caused by colorectal cancer through patient support, education, research and advocacy.

According to the Colon Cancer Alliance, colorectal cancer will affect more lives this year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. Excluding skin cancer, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the US. The American Cancer Society estimated 148,810 new cases and 49,960 deaths in 2008.
Colon cancer, when discovered early, is highly treatable. It is estimated widespread adoption of recommended screening practices can save as many as 30,000 lives each year.
The Center for Disease Control's 2002 colorectal cancer budget was $12 million, compared to $192.6 million for breast and cervical cancer. The National Cancer Institute spent $267 million on colorectal cancer research in 2003, less than half allocated for breast cancer. The Colon Cancer Alliance’s efforts have increased these numbers, but there is still a long way to go to raise awareness about screening and to fund treatment research.
